Cuteness Overload On National Puppy Day
There is nothing as cute as a puppy. Puppies are amazing and are full of energy, wonder at the world around them, and have a fearless attitude when it comes to trying new things. No wonder there is a National Puppy Day on March 23.
Puppies are also in a developmental stage that allows them to become comfortable with a lot of different things. This includes grooming, routine tooth brushing, and even having their nails clipped and maintained. Starting puppies off with positive experiences when it comes to grooming and to training is a foundation for a confident, calm, and well-behaved dog.
To help new puppy owners, there are several services we provide at Dogizone that ensure your puppy gets off to a terrific start. These are also exceptional services for puppy owners, helping you to learn the best ways to interact with your puppy as he or she grows into an adult dog.
Puppy Grooming
It is important for puppies to have a positive experience during early grooming sessions. To help get started, here are some of the basics to keep in mind:
- Bathing – only bathe puppies if necessary. Puppies should be bathed in shallow, warm water and held securely in place to avoid slipping or falling into the water. Place a towel in the basin or the sink to give the puppy secure footing. Use a gentle puppy shampoo (never human shampoo) and keep it away from the eyes, nose, and mouth. Take it very slowly and give the puppy lots of praise. Be sure to rinse the shampoo thoroughly and do not leave any residue in the coat or on the skin.
- Blot dry – use a soft towel and gently blot the puppy’s coat to remove excess water. Do not rub the hair as it can cause matting and create an unpleasant sensation for the puppy.
- Consider a grooming mitt or glove – most puppies have short coats, at least for the first few months. Use a grooming mitt or glove or a soft-bristled brush to gently and slowly brush the coat in the direction of growth. Take it slowly and give lots of praise and little treats.
- Touch their feet – routines that include touching your puppy’s feet, ears, and teeth help to prepare them for more advanced grooming practices later.
