What to Know Before Taking Your Pet to a Public Dog Park
Dog parks are a wonderful resource for individuals who live in urban areas. They provide a safe, relaxing environment for you and your pet to enjoy the great outdoors. Before venturing out, make sure you’re aware of the rules and regulations for your city or state. While these may vary slightly by location here’s what to know before taking your pet to a public dog park.
1) Check the hours of your local park and the age requirements for dog walkers. The majority of parks are open from dawn to dusk and most do require children under 16 to be accompanied by an adult.
2) Research vaccination and licensure requirements for pets in your area. Most parks will require your pet to be current on all necessary vaccinations (and you should have accessible proof that your dog has had a rabies vaccination). Some parks may require that your pet be licensed in the county you live in.
3) Follow appropriate regulations for leashes and collars – certain types of choker collars may be prohibited. Dogs are typically required to be leashed when entering and exiting the park, and particularly aggressive dogs may need to remain on a leash during the entirety of their time in the park.
4) Clean up after yourself and your pet. Dispose of any containers of food or water that you bring into the park (if they’re allowed in). Clean up and dispose of all dog feces. Fill in holes your pet digs. Do your part to maintain the park for everyone’s continued enjoyment.
